Applications of Faraday’s Law of Induction

Applications of Faraday’s Law of Induction

Faraday’s law of induction is also known as Faraday’s law of electromagnetism which is the law of electromagnetism. This law is used for predicting how magnetic fields interact with an electric circuit to produce an electromotive force. Michael Faraday in the year 1831 proposed the law. He was an experimental physicist and chemist.

This is where the law gets its name. These laws are the experiments conducted by Faraday. Further, in this article, we shall learn about the application of Faraday’s law of induction.

Faraday’s Laws of Induction

There are two Faraday’s laws of induction. The first law explains how the induction of emf takes place in a conductor while the second explains the quantification of the emf produced in the conductor.

Faraday’s First Law of Induction

According to the first law of Faraday’s induction, whenever a conductor is placed in a magnetic field that varies, emf is induced. If the conductor is in a closed circuit, then the current induced is known as induced current.

Faraday’s Second Law of Induction

According to the second law of Faraday’s induction, the induced emf in a coil and the rate of change of flux linkage is equal.

Faraday’s Laws of Induction Applications

Transformers

A transformer is defined as an electrical device that is used for transferring the power from one circuit to another. The transmission of power takes place without any involvement of physical contact and characteristics such as frequency and phase remain unchanged. The working of the transformer is dependent on Faraday’s law of induction. The induction can happen in two ways, and they are self-induction and mutual induction. Transformer works on a mutual induction phenomenon happening between two or more windings.

Electric Generator

An electric generator is defined as the device that is used for transforming mechanical energy into electrical energy. An interesting fact about generators and motors is that the same device can be used as either a generator or as a motor. This is possible as the wire coil present in the magnetic field. When the device is used as a motor, the current passes through the coil causing a spin in the coil as there is an interaction of the magnetic field and current. The same device can be used as a generator when the coil is spun by inducing a current in the coil.

In an AC generator, Faraday’s law is used in which the coil spins at a constant rate in the magnetic field inducing an oscillating electromagnetic force.

Working of Credit Card

This is another everyday application of induction. There is a magnetic stripe on the backside of the credit card. These stripes of the magnet are arranged in a particular manner. When the card is swiped, the coil in the credit card machine experiences a change in the magnetic field. This is known as electromagnetic induction. The change in the magnetic field induces a voltage which is responsible for the creation of the current which is used as a signal to access the information from the account to the machine.
